Saint Lyra Rises: Yardij's Swan Song Soars with Strings, Horns, and a Rebirth

By Erin Lee

Yardij played a sold-out, standing-room-only show last night at The Circuit in Fort Lauderdale. One Night Only was a special occasion: in addition to the band's usual lineup, the audience was treated to both string and horn sections! Celebrating drummer Jordan's birthday meant the crowd was treated to extra drum solos - and cake! The evening began with "Something Along the Lines" from the band's 2016 EP of the same name. Lead guitarist Anthony opened the set on piano before moving to stage right.

Playing a tight 14-song set with an intermission halfway through, each band member was given the ability to showcase their talent. Lead vocalist Deja Elyze's confident stage presence was backed by her skills as she effortlessly sang her way through song after song. Deja's soft and gentle vocals made way for soaring choruses, crafting a perfect balance in each song. The smooth bass lines provided by Alex kept a steady groove running throughout the set.

Songs like 2022's "Caller ID" really stood out with the addition of trumpet and saxophone. With just three songs left in the set, Deja took to the microphone to make a big announcement. A video with clips from each band member introduced a name change: after ten years, Yardij has become Saint Lyra! Wrapping up the set with a nostalgic feel, Deja spoke about the band's evolution, writing music since she was a teenager and subsequently connecting with the songs in new ways as an adult. It was truly a full-circle moment for a band I've been following for close to a decade. Big congratulations to Saint Lyra. Keep your eyes peeled for future South Florida performances from these ultra-talented musicians!
