Jane's Addiction brought their style of psychedelic funk rock to Hard Rock Live at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida, last night. Kicking off the evening with tracks from the late 90s like "Kettle Whistle" and "Whores," the band quickly set the tone for the evening. Lead singer Perry Farrell took to the microphone to address the crowd about the current state of our country, encouraging us to celebrate and respect women and decrying misogyny in all forms.
The band was absolutely monstrous in performance. Bassist Eric Avery kept it solid and steady, and drummer Stephen Perkins showcased his chops behind the kit.I've long been a fan of guitarist Dave Navarro's playing. Though he's known as a self-taught musician, he has grown into technical player who is clearly enjoying himself. Navarro really puts his all into every song. Watching him from the audience, you can't help but be drawn in by his quiet magnetism.
Halfway through the set, the band hit their stride playing a pair of their most well known hits: "Jane Says" and "Mountain Song." New track "Imminent Redemption" sounded fantastic, a welcome addition to the Jane's catalog. Farrell spoke fondly about living in South Florida as a teenager, making reference to North Miami Beach High and asking if any of his fellow classmates were in the crowd. He went on to say he would've stayed in Florida if the surfing was better, but he still loves to visit. Perry talked about scoring liquor from South Florida staple Big Daddy's, and sneaking through an unlocked window at the Fillmore to see shows for free.
The crowd loved his candor about his time in the area. An energetic rendition of "Been Caught Stealing" appeared to be the end of the show until Farrell said: "We've got time for one more!" Snare drums were wheeled onstage, and each band member played "Chip Away" while Farrell sang. This was my first time seeing the band live, and I only wish I'd gone sooner! Such a fun show.
