311 took to the stage for a sold-out performance at House of Blues Orlando on Monday, March 24th. South Florida Concert News was there to soak in the positive vibes.
Drummer Chad Sexton's drum riser was adorned with lit selenite towers and bassist P-Nut's custom fretboard glowed in the dark, setting the mood for what was to come.
When you have a decades-spanning 14 album discography you could stick to the tried-and-true, or craft a setlist that's an exercise in creativity. 311 chose the latter, treating the audience to a unique mix of songs spanning their catalog.
Whirling across the stage like a force of nature, singer Nick Hexum brought the first three songs rapid fire: "Homebrew," "Do You Right," and "Beautiful Disaster."
The crowd was packed in tighter than I've ever seen at this venue, but everyone was fully engaged with the performance.
I observed lots of dancing and general vibing to the music.
New tracks "Need Somebody," "Full Bloom," and "You're Gonna Get It" from their latest effort Full Bloom were artfully sprinkled into the set, sounding amazing alongside older favorites like "Beyond The Gray Sky" from 2003's Evolver.
Set staple "Applied Science" saw the band in their famous group drum off, with each member taking turns playing their own percussion set up, following a solo by Sexton.
Winding down to the end of the set, the crowd put their whole heart into an "Amber" singalong.
"Creatures (For a While)" was performed with energy and passion, well received as the regular set came to a close.
The encore consisted of "I'll Be Here Awhile" and "Down," ending the evening with the same level of intensity it started on.
311 always put on a tight, entertaining show. An absolute must see performance.
